Hi,

I have a 500A which I absolutely love.
Looking at the back closely one day I noticed that there's RCA like output that says 'center speaker'. I'm guessing that it is for connection for a sub-woofer. Is this correct? If so, what kind of subwoofer would it take - passive? Active? And what impedance is the best match?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,

This output is a mix of left and right channels from 16 Ohms speaker output with 4.7K Ohms terminations.

This means you need to use an active cross-over sub woofer with a high impedance input with this jack.  No internal cross-over is built-in inside of the 500A.

One other thing - there are 2 speaker impedances, 8 & 16 ohms. I wonder about what harm could come to the 500A if I were to hook up lower impedance speakers to these terminals e.g. a pair of 6ohm speakers to the 8ohm terminals or 8ohm speakers to 16ohm terminals?  If there's no harm, what  would result in doing this mismatch?

I was thinking of buying a pair of speakers with claimed impedance of less than 8.

Any info would be appreciated.

That center channle is combo of both Left and Right chennles. You may be able to use it for a sub, BUT in the days of Tube amplifiers SUB,s never come up that way!! It must be a powered sub-woofer if you think of trying a sub!!
Take care JIM

That Schematic is available, and I have one. Interestingly I also have the Service Manual on the 500 which has differences from the 500A. One big change in the 500A was using Cascoded Nuvistors for the FM RF Amplifier, another change was using 7189 Power Output Tubes in the 500A as opposed to 6BM8 in the 500. I was surprised to see both receivers (the 500 & 500A) use a Foster Seeley Discriminator for FM detection, as opposed to the Ratio Detector which has been around for a while back then. I have the 500A and enjoy it as well.                  ETek

All I want to know is if I can take a 6ohm and a 8ohms sub woofer and a bridge power amp would that harm the amp or speakers because of the unmatched impedence. Thanks
